Preparation & Prerequisites

Before uploading your files, ensure your WordPress environment is ready. Template Kits are sensitive to server settings and require specific plugins to function.

Check Your File

When you download your kit from XYZ Theme, you receive a ZIP file.

Important: Do not unzip this file. WordPress needs the compressed folder to recognize the kit’s data.
Note for Safari users: If your browser automatically unzips downloads, go to Safari Preferences and disable “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading.”

Set Your Permalinks

For the templates to link correctly, navigate to Settings > Permalinks, select Post Name, and click Save Changes.

Install the “Hello Elementor” Theme

While kits can work with many themes, they are designed for the Hello Elementor theme. It is lightweight and prevents design conflicts.

  • Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
  • Search for “Hello Elementor,” install, and activate it.
2

Installing Necessary Tools

To “read” the Template file, you need the official importer plugin.

  1. Go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for “Template Kit Import.”
  3. Install and Activate the plugin.
  4. If you don’t have the Elementor plugin installed yet, WordPress will prompt you to do so now.

Importing the Template Kit

Once your plugins are active, follow these steps to bring in the design:

Upload the ZIP

Navigate to Tools > Template Kit. Click the Upload Template Kit ZIP File button and select the file you downloaded from XYZ Theme.

Install Requirements

A banner will likely appear at the top of the screen stating “Install Requirements.” Do not skip this. Click the button to automatically install any 3rd-party plugins (like MetForm or Premium Addons) that the designer used to build the kit.

Import Global Styles First

You will see a list of templates. Always click Import on the Global Kit Styles first. This sets your site-wide colors, fonts, and button styles.

Import Individual Templates

Now, click Import on the individual pages (Home, About, Contact, etc.). It is best to do this one by one to avoid server timeouts.

Building Your Pages

Now that the designs are in your “library,” you need to apply them to your actual WordPress pages.

  1. Create a new page (Pages > Add New) and click Edit with Elementor.
  2. Click the Envato Leaf Icon in the center of the editor.
  3. Go to View Installed Kit, find the page layout you want (e.g., “Home 1”), and click Insert Template.
Crucial Step: Click the Settings (Gear Icon) in the bottom-left corner of the Elementor sidebar. Set the Page Layout to Elementor Full Width. This removes the default theme title and ensures the design stretches across the whole screen.
5

Configuring Headers and Footers

  • If you have Elementor Pro: Your header and footer will likely be managed under Templates > Theme Builder. You may need to “Add Condition” and set them to “Entire Site.”
  • If you are using the Free version: The kit likely uses a plugin like Header & Footer Builder. Check the documentation included with your download for specific instructions on where to assign these.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • “Invalid Zip File”: Ensure you are uploading the specific Template Kit ZIP, not the “All files and documentation” ZIP from ThemeForest.
  • PHP Version: Elementor works best on PHP 7.4 or 8.x. If the import fails, ask your host to upgrade your PHP version.
  • Placeholder Images: Some kits use blurred images or grey boxes due to licensing. You will need to click the image widget and upload your own high-resolution photos.
